Caftan or takchita: what is the difference?

They look alike at first glance, and many people use the two words for the same thing. Yet the caftan and the takchita are two different garments. Here is how to tell them apart — and how to choose yours.

Caftan or takchita: what is the difference?

The caftan: one garment

The caftan is a long robe made of a single layer, closed at the front with a row of small aakad buttons and decorated with sfifa trim. It has been worn in Morocco for centuries and remains the benchmark of Moroccan elegance.

Its beauty lies in the fabric — velvet, brocade, silk — and in the quality of the embroidery. It can be worn with or without a belt.

The takchita: two layers

The takchita is made of two pieces worn together: the tahtiya, the under-dress that gives it colour and structure, and the dfina, a lighter over-dress, often sheer and richly embroidered, that opens at the front.

It is almost always worn with a belt that marks the waist. Its layered silhouette makes it the garment of weddings and great ceremonies.

How to tell them apart at a glance

  • One layer: it is a caftan. Two layers, with a lighter one on top: it is a takchita.
  • A sheer or open over-dress revealing another fabric underneath is the sign of a takchita.
  • Takchitas are usually more ornate and more ceremonial; caftans range from everyday elegance to grand evenings.

Which one should you choose?

For a wedding, an engagement or a henna night, the takchita is the classic choice — especially for the bride and her close family. For Eid, a dinner or an elegant evening, a caftan is often more comfortable and just as refined.

Not sure? Many women rent a takchita for the big night and buy a caftan they will wear again. Our boutique in Marrakech offers both — to buy, to rent or made to measure.

Frequently asked questions

Is a takchita a kind of caftan?

In everyday language both are often called a caftan, but strictly speaking the takchita is a separate garment made of two layers, while the caftan has one.

Which costs more, a caftan or a takchita?

It depends on the fabric and the embroidery. A takchita has two layers and often more handwork, so it is frequently more expensive than a simple caftan — but a richly embroidered caftan can cost as much.

What is a dfina?

The dfina is the over-dress of the takchita: lighter, often sheer and richly embroidered, worn over the tahtiya.

Can I rent a caftan or a takchita in Marrakech?

Yes — most of our caftans and all our takchitas can be rented, with a fitting in our boutique.
